Gloucester Cathedral, where he had a musical education of the highest standard, was given to him by the highly acclaimed Dr John Sanders and Mark Blatchly. As a chorister, Andrew studied the piano, organ, trumpet, and, of course, voice. He was given the honour of becoming Head Chorister in 1987, which he maintained until 1989. To this day, he remains the longest-serving Head Chorister at Gloucester Cathedral. During this time, he gained awards for performances on piano and for many of his composition works.
Andrew, like many of his contemporaries, was inspired by his time at the King’s School, particularly within the Cathedral. He knew instinctively that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of those he had admired most and those who had encouraged him in his own musical learning. After training at Huddersfield and Oxford Brookes Universities, it is now 26 years since he began his teaching career in England. For sixteen of those he has held the position of Director of Music within some of the top schools in the country. In 2021, Andrew took up the position of Head of Music at Brighton College Bangkok.
Andrew believes that music should be accessible and enjoyable to all, whether that comes from learning to perform, compose or simply listen to and appreciate music. Sharing his joy of music with others gives him a great deal of satisfaction.
Alongside his teaching role, Andrew has continued to compose and takes the opportunity, whenever possible, to create either a brand new piece of music or a beautiful arrangement of something that already exists. He is currently in discussion with the BBC with the view of composing the theme tune for a new children’s programme. Andrew has been approached by the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music a number of times to join them as an examiner, which is something he would like to do in the future. Besides his music, he also loves travelling, reading, catching up with the latest movies, pretty much all sports (especially his beloved Norwich City Football Club) and spending time with his family.
