Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A-levels Vs IB Diploma: Which is right for my child?

A-levels offer strong academic depth. Pupils focus on three subjects, allowing them to develop real expertise in the areas they enjoy most. This level of specialisation is highly valued by universities, especially for competitive courses that expect strong subject mastery. They also provide flexibility. Pupils can choose combinations that suit their individual strengths, whether purely academic or a blend of disciplines, giving them a clear, focused pathway toward their future ambitions. For many young people, this depth, clarity and subject focus make A-levels both motivating and confidence-building, helping them stand out in university applications.

When does Brighton College Sixth Form launch?

What are Sixth Form Year 12 and Year 13 class sizes?

Maximum 15 pupils per A-level class. Small class sizes allow teachers to:
  • Know each pupil’s strengths and development areas
  • Provide frequent, detailed feedback
  • Tailor teaching to individual learning needs
  • Build strong teacher-pupil relationships
This personalised approach helps pupils achieve their full academic potential and prepares them effectively for university-level study.

How do pupils transition from IGCSE to A-levels?

We support the transition through three phases:
Year 11 (IGCSE year):
  • Subject selection guidance sessions
  • A-level subject taster lessons
  • University pathway discussions
  • Grade requirement reviews
Before Sixth Form:
  • Pre-reading for chosen A-level subjects
  • Study skills workshops
  • Academic expectations briefings
Year 12 Term 1:
  • Study skills programme (time management, note-taking, essay writing)
  • Regular check-ins with teachers and tutors
  • Additional support where needed
Our teachers understand that A-levels demand greater independent study and critical thinking than IGCSEs. We scaffold this transition carefully to ensure every pupil succeeds.
