Pre-Prep Curriculum

The Early Year Foundation Stage Curriculum

The English Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum sets the standards for the learning, development and care of your child in our Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception classrooms.

The EYFS has a large number of learning outcomes which most children are expected to reach on ‘graduation’ from Reception. These are split into seven main areas of learning; Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

The pedagogy behind the Early Years means that our learning time is fluid and adaptable on a daily (or even hourly) basis depending on the focus of the children and a teacher’s target learning for the day. Assessment of a child’s progress towards Early Learning Goals (ELGs) happens continually throughout each day allowing learning for the following days to be adapted as necessary. Our children reach ELGs in both Mandarin and English as part of our specialised Dual Language Programme.

Pre-Nursery, Nursery & Reception (Aged 18 Months To 5 Years)

Our Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception Curriculum are designed for children of kindergarten/ preschool years aged 18 months to 5 years.

Early Years Teachers and our team of Learning Assistants are highly specialised and trained in this area due to the complexities and fluidity of this classroom environment. As such, at Brighton College (Singapore), we wholeheartedly believe that these teachers are best placed to deliver all of the subject areas to the children and thus, there are limited numbers of specialists removing the students from this learning environment to teach subject specific lessons.

Specialist in the following areas, do visit the Nursery and Reception classrooms to deliver fun activities and learning opportunities:

  • Art
  • Computing
  • Music
  • PE
  • Dance
  • Swimming

The transition from Reception to Year 1 is a large one and thus, we purposefully house our Year 1 within the Early Learning Village as part of the Pre-Prep School.

Although the classrooms are set up differently to those in Reception, the familiarity of the immediate surroundings and the faces of the adults they interact with in the school buildings will mean the only changes they need to adopt are those in the style of learning and timings; we transition our Year 1 students to the Prep School timings so they become familiar with this structure to the school day.

Our Year 1 teachers have all been handpicked for their significant understanding of this transition and their experience and knowledge of the Year 2 requirements.

As Year 1 progresses the children’s interactions with Year 2 and the Prep School will be increased. By sharing the same school schedule with Year 2 we provide opportunities for Year 1 to visit the Prep School for playtimes and lunchtimes in the final half term. When they do make the physical move into our Prep School, they will be fully prepared, confident and ready.

Year 1 Curriculum (Aged 5-6 Years)

This first year of our enhanced English National Curriculum programme of study introduces our pupils to the full range of academic subjects which are taught as standalone lessons.

This includes our core subjects of Maths, English, Mandarin and Science alongside Geography and History.

The following subjects continue to be an essential part of the school week building on the knowledge and skills gained from the weekly visiting specialist sessions that take place in the EYFS.

  • PE
  • Swimming
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Art
  • Computing
